Football club wants school site

2/07/2008 10:54:00 PM
A KNOX junior football club has renewed its push for an upgrade to Dobson Park, with hopes to use land on a former school site on Dorset Road, Ferntree Gully.

Upper Ferntree Gully Junior Football Club has expressed its interest in using the old Ferntree Gully Secondary College site to develop sporting facilities.

Club secretary Heather Leslie said it was hoping to make permanent use of the ovals, and build a pavilion to accommodate the growth the club is experiencing.

Ms Leslie said up to 40 potential players were being turned away, with the club not having the space to fit everyone in.

She said the club had been in contact with local politicians to see if it could play a role in the future of the site.

Ms Leslie said the club wanted to get as many people as it could playing football.

"We're turning people away, so it is only going to benefit the club and sporting community.

"Why can't we use these facilities? They're just sitting there.''

The Ferntree Gully Secondary College site has been vacant since 2006, with the nearby Ferntree Gully Primary School site vacant since 2005. Ferntree Gully Liberal MP Nick Wakeling said the community was "justifiably angry about the inaction on these sites''.

"Both sites look derelict, being surrounded by cyclone fencing.

"I have previously called upon the minister to make a decision in relation to these sites, but the indecisiveness of the Labor Government has simply resulted in years of inaction.''

Mr Wakeling said if the sites are deemed surplus to educational needs, they should be retained for community use, including for sporting clubs.

Victorian Government spokesman Michael Sinclair said the future of both sites was still being considered.
